In January 1996, Hanging Together proposed X Window Shopping a shop-window installation to form part of the Whole Shebang Festival.
The proposal met with no real response from the festival organisers, other than that if the group found and rented a shop-space, the installation could be listed in the festival catalogue. No help was offered.
So these pages are an alternative. They show various material and virtual works developing the original theme.
A series of six picture cards have also been circulated at various public spaces around Stirling. Collect all six!
“You Choose X” by Paul Eames
“You Choose” explores the relationship between retailer and customer, the dialogue which takes place, and the “privilege” of roles assumed by each party.
Recreate an authentic womb atmosphere with our new Womb Collection 1996...
“X Marks The Scot” by Peter Russell
The Saltire marks our destiny, of leaping into the unknown, fueled by ire, crossing seas for anticipated reward...
“Something Wrong” by Val Shatwell
One of a number of abstract panels using X as the mark for wrong, for cancelling-out and forbidding: the negative and dark side of X.
“XXXX - Pockets of Desire” by Karen Strang
A series of four zipped pockets are stuffed to bulging point with various “goodies” which can only be glimpsed.
